Red Light Therapy
The History and Mechanisms of Light Therapy Benefits
Red Light Therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, is a futuristic health technology that harnesses elements of our natural world
and connects us to rituals of our ancient past. Purely engineered LED diodes emit 940nm, 850nm, 810nm, and 633nm near-infrared and red light wavelengths with high irradiance of 140 mw/cm2 (power) to mimic the restorative illuminance of the rising and setting sun. The sunrise and sunset are known to have the highest saturations of near-infrared and red light wavelengths. Ancient civilizations across the globe including the Egyptians, Greeks, and Aztecs ritualized the sunrise and sunset with spiritual and communal ceremonies. We find many of these practices alive today across many cultures and belief systems.

Photobiomodulation was discovered over 50 years ago by Endre Mester in Hungary whose early light therapy study used a ruby laser (694nm) and HeNe laser (633nm).
In 1993, NASA, in conjunction with Quantum Devices, invested in near-infrared and red light research with an aim to improve cellular function and prevent bone and muscle loss in astronauts who have long-term spaceflight missions.
Today, more than 2,000 clinical studies have helped us gain knowledge on the benefits red light therapy has on human biology. Photobiomodulation enhances aesthetics, powers sports performance, reduces pain, elevates brain health, and improves sleep quality by:
- Red Light Therapy energizes and maximizes the body’s cellular and molecular potential. More specifically, photobiomodulation
has affinity to the mitochondria, the power plant of the cell. The downstream positive physiological responses of the
mitochondrial activation includes increases in ATP (the cell’s energy current) and Nitric Oxide (NOS) production, cleansing of
unhealthy cells, and the regulation of molecular pathways linked to heart and systemic chronic diseases. - The aforementioned physiological responses drive the following cellular and molecular benefits including improved healthy cell
survival and increases in the number of cells and cellular specialization, the process of a cell becoming more “specialized” to
carry out a specific function. An example of cell specialization is a stem cell developing into a new skin cell. - Red light therapy boosts the building of proteins and circulation all while decreasing inflammation and oxidative stress.
- Similar to photosynthesis in plant life, photobiomodulation binds to photoreceptors and other light sensitive molecules in the
human body, called opsins. For example, photoreceptors in the eyes, help regulate melatonin and sleep
